The following story is one of many ways in which drone technology is changing our world for the better. KCCI 8 reports that authorities in Minnesota say a 6-year-old boy who had been missing since getting off the school bus with his siblings has been found safe thanks to a drone.
The Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office said the boy, named Ethan, hadn’t been seen since 4:10 p.m. Tuesday when he got off the bus near Highway 25 in Becker and ran to play with the family dog. Becker is located about 45 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
CBS Minnesota reports a drone with a thermal camera spotted the child in a cornfield.
The sheriff’s office said on its Facebook page that Ethan was found safe with his dog about 1:50 a.m. on Wednesday, about a mile and a half from his home. The boy was cold overnight, when temperatures were in the low 40s, but he was otherwise unhurt.
“If not for that drone, I’m not sure we would have found him,” Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott told CBS Minnesota.
The drone pilot, Steve Fines, said it was a powerful moment when Ethan was found.
“It was a moment that was going to make his parents so happy, and vicariously we all felt that,” he said.
The department thanked the numerous partnering agencies and more than 600 volunteers who helped with the search.
